Adapting to Life in Japan

Moving to Japan can offer you a great opportunity to learn about the local culture, history and traditions.  With a greater understanding of how to adapt to life in Japan, you may discover new and exciting ways to make your life richer and your tour.

Japanese for Busy People

Learning useful phrases and pronunciation can help you communicate more effectively while in Japan. These classes offer the basics of Japanese language.  The classes are free and are a excellent way to discover how you can communicate in Japanese.

 

Japanese Language Class
An integrated study of the fundamentals of Japanese, with emphasis on listening comprehension and speaking skills.  The relationship of culture and customs to language use and development, as well as instruction and information on Japanese and Okinawan customs and cultures, also are highlighted as an integral part of the class.  Class registration is free, but students will be required to purchase a text book.

Japanese Summer Kimono (Yukata)
Compared to the standard kimono ensemble, the Yukata is lightweight, varies significantly in pattern, and requires less accessories and undergarments.  This special session discusses those differences and provides tips and techniques on how to purchase and care for the Japanese summer kimono.  The seminar includes a demonstration of the proper techniques for donning and wearing the Yukata.

Washi Paper Crafts

The Japanese use colorful bits and pieces of Japanese paper (Washi) to turn many items into household decorations. All materials are provided.

Brush Writing

Learn the art of Japanese brush writing and how to make beautiful works of art from basic Japanese characters (kanji).  Supplies are provided in this hands-on workshop

 

Sanshin Class
Sanshin is an Okinawan traditional instrument. It is a banjo like three-stringed instrument commonly used to play Okinawan music. The music can range from soft and gentle to highly energetic and fun. No musical experience necessary.
